Safe Quality Food (SQF) certification allows food safety and quality systems to be verified and validated throughout the food chain. The SQF Code is a process and product certification standard. The main feature of the SQF Code is its emphasis on the systematic application of HACCP to control food quality hazards and food safety and ultimately foster a safe and quality manufacturing culture at the facility.
SQF certification assures that the supplier’s food safety plans have been implemented in accordance with the HACCP-based methods and applicable regulatory requirements to effectively manage food safety and quality. It is also a statement of the supplier’s commitment to produce safe, quality food, and comply with SQF requirements and other applicable food legislation.
Produced on January 1, 2018, the SQF Code, Ed. 8 makes certification attainable for all companies by dividing the process based on product category and safety systems:
- Food Safety Fundamentals: Covers only GAP/GMP/GDP requirements and basic food safety elements.
- Food Safety Code: For food manufacturers, packaging facilities, distributors, packing houses, pet food manufacturers – HACCP-required, risk-based food safety system.
- Food Quality Standard Comprehensive Food Safety and Quality Management System: Indicates that a food quality risk analysis of the product/processes has been completed and that corrective actions to prevent poor quality have been implemented.
